Shorinji Kempo
Shorinji Kempo is a unique Japanese martial art inspired by Chinese kung fu. The founder of Shorinji Kempo, Doshin So, studied a form of Shaolin kung fu and visited the Songshan Shaolin Temple, which was in ruins at that time. Inspired by the murals of monks practicing paired techniques on the walls of the temple, he decided that the modern kung fu practice of training through solo forms was not really traditional. He took the kung fu he had been taught in China, restructured it into paired methods in imitation of the Shaolin Temple murals, and named it “Shorinji Kempo,” which actually translates as “Shaolin kung fu.”
