If I ever saw a life-size robot display this much dexterity, I am pretty sure I would run for the hills. Of course, that would be a useless maneuver given its quick reflexes.
The robot in question, at least the one that got me started on this topic, looks like a mechanical 'being' or form made from rather flexible joints. I would love to come up with a better description but I am constantly reminded of Arnold's metallic arm from Terminator 2. It displays amazing prowess as it handles a small ball, a lengthy slim stick and a rather thick roll of ... something or the other. To be fair, it didn't handle them all at once and strike a Ninja pose at the end but I am sure, given the right opportunity, it can pull it off.
The little guy was made by a company called Ishikawa Komuro laboratories. This is a Tokyo-based company that is focusing on a number of interesting innovations. The machine featured in the video is just one of their weird and wonderful creations. For instance, check out their Khronos Projector and the High Speed Batting Machine.
In all honesty, such technology can pave way for replacement joints etc. for humans and are thus welcome news. At the same time, you are that much closer to creating hordes of intelligent robots that can work for or even co-exist with humans.
I just hope that when the time comes and I run into one of those these beings, its first words are not the infamous Borg words - “Resistance is futile”.
