This week, the net was abuzz with news of a manga about Ubuntu, a tech-comic from Japan. It's called Ubunchu; it's meant to be a cute play on mispronouncing Ubuntu. Well, this much was evident from the comic creator's quirky comments in between panels. Who's the tech-geek behind this fun little comic? For those of you who don't already know, it's made by Hiroshi Seo, aka Seotch.

What's the story about? It's a high school comedy which sort of revolves around Ubuntu. Looks like there will be personality clashes, ideological fights and of course, hilarious mishaps. All in all, the usual fun stuff that make a comic worthwhile. I would like to think that folks unfamiliar with Ubuntu or even Linux distros in general will enjoy the comic. I am not entirely sure of that. But being a Linux user myself, I was amused by Seotch's subtle comments in the comic - complaints about the command line, worries about user friendliness and of course the age-old "How will I play all my games now" wail. I like the fact that the comic can dispel annoying myths about Linux while revolving sub plots around such diverse characters. Ubunchu is available in Japanese as well as a number of other languages. Don't worry about accessing the comic on any of the links provided. It's all legit, most of them got permission from Seotch himself. Actually he has released the manga under CC license (BY-NC) which also paves ways for anyone else wishing to translate into their own language.

Of course this comic piqued my interest in the artist himself. The English language site links to his manga and has a list of all the available translations. I also stumbled across his DeviantArt page and I must say I am impressed with his artwork for ?Ryujyo Shouro. Now I'm wondering where I can nab that comic. It has a certain fantasy-mythical element which will be interesting to explore. Speaking of comics, on both these sites he mentions his previous work called Akihabara Police Station. It seems to be a detective story, of sorts, who investigates tech crimes. That would be an interesting story to read as well. For now, keep an eye out for more episodes of Ubunchu!
